Cox's Bazar trader abduction: 7 DB men sent to jail

A Cox’s Bazar court today sent seven members of the Detective Branch of Police to jail in connection with a case filed for kidnapping a businessman and taking Tk 17 lakh as ransom.

Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court sent them to Cox’s Bazar jail after Md Shafiul Alam, inspector (operation) of Teknaf Police Station also investigation officer of the case, produced them before it this noon, our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent report quoting police.

Six of them were detained yesterday with a ransom of Tk 17 lakh in Cox's Bazar half an hour after the six along with another DB man released a local trader they had abducted on Tuesday.

The seven DB men kidnapped blanket trader Abdul Gafur, younger brother of Teknaf municipality mayor Moniruzzaman, from the district town and demanded Tk 50 lakh as ransom.

Hours after the release, Abdul Gafur lodged a case Teknaf Police Station against the BD men under the penal court.

Gafur brought allegations in the case that the DB men abducted him and threatened him to kill if he fails to pay Tk 50 lakh as ransom to the lawmen.   

The arrestees are Inspector Yeasir Arafat; sub-inspectors Abul Kalam Azad, Golam Mortoza and Firoz Ahmed; Assistant Sub-inspector Md Nuruzzaman and Constable Mostafa Alam.

Of them, Md Nuruzzaman who escaped the arrest surrendered before the law enforcer voluntarily, the OC said.

Police also formed a one-member probe body led by Afjurul Hoque Tutul, additional superintendent of police in the district to investigate the matter, the OC said.

“I have already started investigation finding out facts into the allegation,” the ASP said.
