SC upholds order scrapping Tuku’s acquittal

The Supreme Court on March 12, 2017 upheld its order scrapping the acquittal of former BNP state minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku in a corruption case.

The Supreme Court today upheld its order scrapping the acquittal of former BNP state minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku in a corruption case.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed a petition filed by Tuku seeking review of its 2014 order.

On January 27 in 2014, the Supreme Court cancelled the acquittal of Tuku and asked the High Court to re-hear his appeal against the lower court verdict that sentenced him to nine years imprisonment in the case.

Later on Tuku submitted the review petition through the Appellate Division against the SC order.

The Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that the High Court would further hold hearing on the appeal filed by Tuku challenging the lower court verdict that sentenced him to nine years imprisonment in the corruption case.
