The Supreme Court today directed a lower court to consider giving bail to veteran journalist Shafik Rehman on his surrender before the court in a case filed over alleged attempt to kidnap and kill the prime minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

The apex court asked Shafik Rehman to surrender to the Metropolitan Magistrate Court and seek bail in the case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order following a petition filed by Shafik Rehman seeking extension of the SC order that granted him bail in the case.

On August 31 the Supreme Court granted bail to Shafik Rehman for three months or till submission of the police report in the case.

The three-month period has expired on November 30, his lawyer M Asaduzzaman told The Daily Star.

He said Shafik Rehman will surrender to the lower court on December 14 and he will remain on bail till then as per the SC order.

The Supreme Court on August 30 granted three-month bail to journalist Shafik Rehman in the case.

Earlier on June 7, the High Court rejected Shafik's bail petition in the same case.

Detectives posing as television reporters arrested him on April 16 from his residence.
