Satkhira cop killed by ‘bullet from own gun’

A policeman was killed by a bullet “accidentally fired from his own gun” near Koikhali Forest Camp in the Sundarbans of Satkhira yesterday.

Deceased Miaraz Hossain, 32, was a constable of the river police camp. He hailed from Rajshahi district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and river police conducted a drive at Bashukhali canal in the Sundarbans and rescued four fishermen abducted by forest robbers yesterday afternoon, said Mantu Kumar Das, in-charge of Rainagar River police camp.

Later, the rescued fishermen were handed over to Koikhali forest camp.

After the drive, all the river policemen boarded a trawler to return to their camp, he said.

“At one stage, Miaraz received a bullet accidentally fired from his own gun in the trawler and died on the spot”, said Mantu.
