RU BCL beats up 2 freshers who stood up to eve-teasing

Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Rajshahi University today beat up two freshers for standing up against eve teasing at campus by the ruling party men.

Rony Hasan and Rahul, first year students of sociology – were beat up for protesting eve-teasing during fresher’s orientation programme, our RU stringer reports.

The BCL activists led by Miraz and Rahat, second year students of marketing – were teasing a female student of sociology at RU’s Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium.

Tarun Kumar Joarder, a psychology professor, controlled the situation quickly.

But later at the end of the programme, the BCL activists called Rony and Rahul to the university’s Shaheed Minar premises and allegedly beat them up, witnesses said.

Rony was primarily taken to the university medical centre and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

“They [BCL men] beat me as we protested the eve teasing incident,” Rony said.

Denying the allegation, BCL activist Rahat said: “We’ve just slapped him [Rony] as he misbehaved with us.”

BCL’s RU unit president Golam Kibria said he did not hear the incident. “The accused must be punished.”

RU Proctor Prof Mujibul Haque Azad Khan said, “We’ll take necessary steps after getting a written complaint.”
