Root out irregularities in education system, ACC writes to ministry

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today put forward two separate letters with a bundle of recommendations to the primary and mass education ministry urging to initiate a “crash programme” to root out irregularities and corruption in the entire education system.

ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmud has recently made sudden visit to six primary and secondary schools in Chattogram, and found most of the teachers absent.

Based on the outcome of the visit, the anti-corruption watchdog, sent the recommendation urging the ministry to take step on an urgent basis to bring discipline in the education sector, an official of the ACC told The Daily Star.

In the letter, the ACC expressed grave concern over the prevailing irregularities in the education sector and underscored the need for getting rid of the situation, the ACC official said.

The efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be uncertain while turning the future generation into a human resource will be a far cry if the situation is not changed, according to the letter.

Under this context, the ACC wrote to the ministry urging it to take emergency steps to root out irregularities, corruption and mismanagement in the education sector, the source added.

A letter signed by ACC Secretary Shamsul Arefin was sent to the secretary of primary and mass education ministry while another one was sent to the secretary of the secondary and higher secondary education division, the ACC official added.
