‘Robber’ killed in Feni ‘gunfight’ with Rab

An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion in Sonagazi upazila of Feni early today.

Deceased Gabba Masud, 34, was a listed criminal, according to a short-message service (SMS) floated by Assistant Superintendent of Police Amir Hossain, media officer of Rab-7 in Chittagong.

Acting on a tip-off, Rab men conducted a drive at Char Chandia union in the upazilla when a gang of robber led by Masud was preparing for committing a robbery there around 2:30am, the Rab official said.

Masud was killed in the “gunfight” while two Rab members also suffered critical injuries, the SMS reads.

Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports: Masud, a member of a local robber gang “Kalam Bahini”, was planning to rob the house of an UAE expatriate Enam.

“On information, a Rab team raided the area. Sensing their presence, the robbers opened fire forcing the law enforcers to fire back that triggered the gunfight,” the daily said quoting Squadron Leader Safayet Jamil, captain of Rab-7 Feni camp.

Bullet-injured Masud was rushed to Feni General Hospital where he was declared dead.

Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge of Sonagazi Model Police Station, said Masud was accused in at least 12 cases including murder, robbery and extortion.
