'Robber' killed in Comilla 'gunfight'

A suspected robber was killed during a “gunfight” with police at Debidwer upazilla of Comilla early today.

The deceased was identified as Md Sumon, 35, son of Habibur Rahman of Kuroin area of Debidwer upazila, our comilla correspondent reports quoting police.

On information that a gang of robbers in Checrapukuria area on Chandina-Debidwer road was preparing to for a robbery, a police team led by Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Debidwer Police Station, raided the area around 1:15am, the correspondent said quoting the OC.

“Sensing police presence, the robbers opened fire on law enforcers prompting them to retaliate,” the OC said.

After the gunfight police found bullet-hit Sumon. His cohorts managed to flee. He was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, said the OC.

Three policemen, Sub-inspector (SI) Asad, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Intaz and Constable Monir of Debidwer Police Station were also injured during the incident, the OC added.

Police recovered one fire arm, one round of bullet, a mask, a shovel and a knife from the spot.

Sumon, had at least 18 cases of robbery and rape against him filed with different police stations, the OC confirmed.

A case has been filed in this regard at the Debidwer Police Station this morning, the correspondent said.
