‘Robber’ killed in Sundarbans ‘gunfight’

An alleged robber gang leader was killed in what Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) described as gunfight at Bagerhat in the Sundarbans this morning.

The deceased was identified as Shipon, 32, said to be leader of the infamous Shipon Gang, our Bagerhat correspondent reports quoting Rab.

Tipped-off, a patrol team of the elite force raided a hideout of the gang in Mrigmari Khal around 6:00am, said Lt Col Faridul Alam, a captain of RAB-8.

Sensing presence of law enforcers, the gang opened with gunfire, he said. “RAB were compelled to shoot in return. Forty minutes of gunfight took place.”

After the battle subsided, Shipon’s body was found lying on the spot. Seven single-barrel guns, two short guns, over 200 rounds of bullets, two .22 calibre rifles, five shooter guns and five sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
