An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and police in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia early today.

Dead Milon Ali alias Data Milon 32, was a leader of an inter-district robber gang, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting Kazi Jalal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station.

Police had information that an armed robber gang was preparing to strike on the Kushtia-Meherpur highway around 4:00am, the OC said.

A team of Mirpur police cracked down in Chuniapara area. The robbers opened gunfire as police gave them a chase, leading to “gunfight”, he claimed.

During the half an hour “shootout” Milon received multiple bullet injuries. Doctors declared him dead after he was rushed to Mirpur upazila health complex at about 5.00am.

His accomplices managed to flee the scene. Two police men—SI Shaidul Islam and Constable Mainul Islam – were injured, the OC added.

Police recovered three sharp weapons and a saw from the spot. Milon was an accused in three cases, the OC said.
