RMG worker’s body found at Ashulia factory

Police today recovered the body of a readymade garment worker at his factory in Ashulia of Savar, outskirts of Dhaka.

Deceased, identified as Mamun, 24, son of Shukur Ali of Zerai Poschimpara village at Gobindoganj of Gaibandha, worked as a swing operator at Sonia Sweater Limited, reports our Gazipur correspondent.

Workers of the garment found the body hanging from a ceiling fan at the fifth floor of the factory around 8:00am, police said.

Seeing this, they burst into protest, alleging it as a murder incident over “initiating of automatic machine instead of labour”.

Meanwhile, police and garment authorities initially termed it as a suicide incident.

Mohsinul Kadir, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station said, “It might be a suicide incident.”

“The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy,” he added, saying additional police were deployed in front of the factory to avert any untoward situation.

Mahbubur Rahman, Director of Sonia Sweater Limited told reporters brushed aside the incident as “murder” rather echoed police.

“Yes, a suicide incident took place in the factory. The worker was employed in this factory for his last 10 years,” said Mustafa Kamal Shaheen, chairman of the factory.
