Rape of madrasa girl sparks protest in Pirojpur

A human chain was formed in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur district yesterday, demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprit who raped a madrasa girl at Paschim Lakkhan village in the upazila on the night of August 13. 

Several thousand students from eight educational institutions joined the hour-long programme at Bandhabpara Bazaar in the upazila at 12:00 noon. Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers demanded immediate arrest of the rapist.

At around 9:00pm on the night, Hasan Akon, 20, son of Abu Saleh Akon, went to the neighbouring house of the victim, and asked for a matchbox. Taking advantage of the fact that the victim's mother lives abroad and her father was out of the house at that time, Akon raped the girl. 

The victim's father filed a case with the Mathbaria Police Station the following day, accusing Hasan.

Khandakar Mostafizur Rahman, officer- in-charge of Mathbaria Police Station, said they are trying to arrest the rapist.

Meanwhile, Pirojpur district police have taken steps to create awareness among the people against women and children repression. They have pasted colour posters at different spots in the district, urging the people to prevent those crimes.
