Rape incidents in September highest ever in 9yrs

The number of rape incidents increased significantly in September compared to the previous month, a report of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad said today.

In fact, the number of rape incidents reported in September this year is the highest to have occurred in any single month since 2010.

Last month, a total of 232 rape incidents were reported while the number was 169 in August.

Among the rape victims, 19 were gang-raped and 15 were murdered after rape in September. Besides, at least 15 others became victims of attempted rape and 30 were harassed sexually, the report found.

The total incident of violence against women and girls has also increased significantly in the last month than the previous month.

A total 521 women and girl became victims of violence in September whereas the number was 379 in previous month, the report added.

It also found more than 41 women and girls were murdered in the month for various reasons, while 21 were physically assaulted and 17 were abducted.

Among 13 women tortured for dowry, five died in September, the report mentioned.

A total of 19 women and girls were forced to commit suicide after being tortured while 29 died mysteriously, according to the report.

A total 42 incidents of child marriage took place while 41 others were prevented in September, the report said.
