Rajshahi University students today formed a human chain protesting physical harassment of female students by unknown people on the campus.

The protest sparked on the campus, following the latest incident of harassment as a group of unidentified people riding a motorbike assaulted a fourth year student of English department and snatched away her scarf yesterday.

The victim alleged that the bikers hurled abusive words at her when she was returning to her residential hall from Kazla area around 7:00 pm.

“Just after a while, when I reached Paris Road area near my hall, the same bike came back and snatched away my scarf and fled the spot,” she told our RU correspondent.

Earlier on Monday, another group of female students were also physically harassed by a biker near the Munnujan hall. The biker also pushed one of the girls making her fall on the ground.

Protesting the incidents, Pragatishil Chhatra Jote organised the human chain in front of Rabindra Arts Building demanding punishment of the culprits and security on the campus.

RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said the university authorities are trying to find out who is responsible for the incidents.

“We are trying to increase vigilance of law enforcers on the campus to ensure security,” Prof Lutfor added.

RU Pro VC Anand Kumar Saha said they will meet civil society representatives and police to find ways to secure the campus.
