Rail link disrupted in Gaibandha over demo for 4 ‘missing’ leaders

Train communication was disrupted in Gaibandha for half an hour today as locals staged a demonstration on the railway tracks demanding information on the whereabouts of four “missing” Awami League and BNP leaders of the district.

Several hundred people including relatives of the missing leaders of different political parties held a protest rally at Naldanga Railway Station in Shadullahpur upazila at 11:00am, halting intercity train service, our Gaibandha correspondent reports quoting police.

The missing persons are Monoarul Hasan Jim, vice president of upazila Jubo League unit, Sadequl Islam Sadique, former president of Damudorpur union unit Chhatra League, Maidul Islam Prince, publication secretary of Naldanga union AL unit, and Shafiul Islam Shapla, assistant secretary of Naldanga union unit Jubo Dal.

Locals claimed that the four were picked up by law enforcers from different places in Naldanga upazila on January 9 and 10.

Police in the district are investigating to find out the whereabouts of the missing political leaders, the correspondent reports quoting Farhad Imrul Kayes, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shadullahpur Police Station.

A missing case was filed on January 11 with the police station, the OC added.

Lalmoni Express got stranded at the station for half an hour following the demonstration, the OC said.
