The High Court today ordered the authorities concerned to take steps so that financially insolvent tourists can use 50 percent of umbrella seats at Cox’s Bazar sea beach without any cost.

Issuing a suomoto (of its own) rule, the court asked the respondents to mark 50 percent of umbrella seats, known as Kitkot chair, with red colour and to ensure that these seats can be used by the poor tourists visiting the beach at free of cost.

In the rule, the court asked the respondents to explain as to why collecting unreasonable rents from the people for using the Kitkot chairs at Cox’s Bazar sea beach should not be declared illegal.

Civil aviation and tourism secretary, chairman of Bangladesh Tourism Corporation, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Cox’s Bazar, and mayor of Cox’s Bazar Municipality have been made the respondents to the rule.

The HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif came up with the order and issued the rule after hearing an argument from Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal.

The lawyer told the judges that financially insolvent people are being deprived of enjoying the beauty of Cox’s Bazar sea beach sitting on the Kitkot chairs.

He prayed to the HC to pass necessary orders in this regard.
