Probe body formed over rape, murder of Habiganj girl

Police today formed a three-member committee to investigate the case filed over the sensational rape and murder of a teenage girl of Shayestaganj upazila in Habiganj.

The committee will thoroughly investigate the rape and murder of Beauty Akhter, 16, and submit a report within three working days, Bidhan Tripura, superintendent of police (SP) in Habiganj, told our Moulvibazar correspondent.

The committee will be led by Shamsur Rahman, additional superintendent of police in Habiganj, the SP said.

Beauty, who lived at Brahmondora village in the upazila, had been stalked and harassed on her way to workplace by one Babul Mia and his accomplices, according to the case.

After she complained, Babul in association with his associates allegedly kidnapped Beauty from her home and took her to an unknown place.

Babul raped Beauty holding hostage in the unknown place for a month from January 21 to Febraury 21, according to the case statement.

Later, the victim's father Sayed Ali, a day labourer, filed a rape and abduction case against 11 people including Babul Mia and his mother, who is a local UP member, with Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal.

As Babul threatened them to withdraw the case, Sayed sent his daughter to a relative's house in Lakhai upazila on March 13.

On March 16, Babul reportedly kidnapped her again and raped her and killed her. Later, the body was left in a haor in the area.

The victim’s father then filed a case with Shayestaganj Police Station in Habiganj on March 18.

The accused went into hiding following the murder.
