UP polls: BCL leader jailed for 2yrs for carrying pistol

A mobile court has sentenced a BCL leader to two years’ imprisonment after he was arrested along with a pistol at a polling centre in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong during the fourth phase of union parishad election yesterday.

The convict is Nurul Azim Rony, BCL general secretary of Chittagong city unit, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting Md Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station.

Rony was arrested at Charia Board School polling centre in Mirzapur union where he entered illegally with a pistol and stuffed ballot papers, said Mohammad Ismail, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station.

A 9mm pistol, 15 bullets and Tk 26,000 were recovered from Rony’s possession, the OC said.

Later, the mobile court convicted Rony and sent him to jail.

A case has also been filed under the Arms Act, the OC said.
