Two sub-inspectors (SIs) of Baro Bazar Police Camp under Kaliganj Police Station allegedly physically assaulted an elderly woman during a raid at Ghoppara Gorinathpur village to arrest her son on Wednesday night.

Injured Saleha Begum, 60, wife of Samsuddin Mondol of the village, is now undergoing treatment at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex.

Doctor Mahfuzur Rahman of Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex said Saleha bore several marks of injury on her body.

While talking to the journalists, victim Saleha said a police team, led by SI Bikash Kumar and SI Azahar Hossain, raided the house of former Kastobhanga union panel chairman Tipu Sultan on Wednesday night and arrested him.

During the raid, Tipu's mother Saleha and wife Jyotsna Begum repeatedly asked the policemen about the reason behind the arrest.

At one stage, aggrieved Bikash and Azahar kicked them with boots and indiscriminately slapped and punched them, leaving them injured, one of their relatives Rakibul Islam said.

They also beat up Tipu on the spot when he tried to save his elderly mother, Rakibul said.

Contacted, SI Bikash said they went to the village to arrest Tipu, a drug peddler, when his family members prevented police from performing their duties.

SI Bikash, however, denied physically assaulting anyone during the raid.

OC Mizanur Rahman of the PS said none had complained about torturing any woman.

On November 1, another SI of the PS raided one Shukur Ali's house at Kashipur village and hurled abusive words towards his wife Chalita Begum, alleged locals.

Protesting the scolding, locals in their hundreds chased the SI and drove him away from the area and also brought out a broom procession against him.
