Police raid suspected militant den at Kallyanpur

Law enforcers conducted an operation in a suspected den in Kalyanpur’s road no 5 and adjacent areas in the wee hours of tuesday, locals said adding gunshots and blasts were heard at around 1:00am.

Mirpur police in association with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) launched the operation.

An anti-militant raid was under way, said a police officer, seeking anonymity.

The militants hurled hand grenades and fired at police from the 4th floor of a building. Police also fired bullets in retaliation.

Police and members of other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the five-storey building.

Suspected militant held, sustained bullet injury

Suspected militant Hasan, 25, of Jibannagar in Bogra, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital with bullet injury and a fracture in his left leg, Sentu Chandra Das, assistant sub-inspector at DMCH police camp told The Daily Star.

The injured told the duty doctor and nurses that he along with ten others live in the fourth floor of the building from where he jumped off sensing police presence.

Inside the flat, there were heavy arms and explosives, he said.

He used to cook for ten others, Hasan told the doctor.

On July 1, Dhaka witnessed one of the worst terror attacks in its history as gunmen attacked Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale eatery on Road 79 of Gulshan killing 22 people including two police officers after a 12-hour long hostage situation.

Nine Italians, seven Japanese, two Bangladeshis, one Bangladeshi-American and one Indian were among the dead. Thirteen hostages were rescued while six of the gunmen, who attacked the upscale eatery were killed in a 50-minute army-led joint forces operation codenamed "Operation Thunderbolt".
