Court rejects cop’s bail in rape case

A Dhaka court today rejected a bail petition filed by Abdur Rakib Khan Bappi, a sub-inspector (SI) of Mirpur Police Station, in connection with a rape case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Md Noman passed the order after Bappi’s lawyer moved a bail petition this afternoon.

During the hearing, the complainant was present at the court and opposed the petition.  

On January 3, another Dhaka court sent Bappi to jail after he was produced before the court with a report in which the investigation officer appealed for keeping the policeman in jail until the probe completes.

The court, however, fixed today (January 7) for hearing the bail petition submitted by his lawyer.

According to police, a woman filed a case on January 2 with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station alleging that SI Bappi raped her by making false promise of marriage.

SI Bappi, hailing from Kishoreganj, was arrested from the capital’s Agargaon area on the same day.
