Poet Sazzad Quadir no more

Noted poet and journalist Sazzad Qadir died of old age complications this afternoon at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. He was 70.

In a statement, leaders of Jatiya Press Club (JPC) expressed deep shock at the death of Sazzad Quadir.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu in a statement expressed deep shock at the death of Sazzad Quadir.

He recalled Quadir's contribution to literature and journalism and prayed to the almighty Allah for the eternal peace of his departed soul.

The minister also conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Born at Mirer Betka village in Tangail on April 14 in 1947, Sazzad Qadir became prominent as a poet, journalist and researcher of Bengali literature in the 1960s.

In 1962, Sazzad Qadir passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination from Bindubasini High School. Later he obtained BA (Honors) Degree in Bengali Language and Literature in 1969 and Masters Degree in 1970 from Dhaka University.

After the Liberation War in 1972, Sazzad Qadir joined as a teacher in the Bengali Department of Karotia Govt Saadat College in Tangail.

In 1976, he started his carrier in journalism at the weekly magazine 'Bichitra' after leaving the teaching job.

In 1978, he joined Radio Beijing. From 1982 to 1985, Quadir worked at the daily Sangbad.

Sazzad Qadir has written many poems as well as stories, novels, plays and essays. In his lifetime, he has edited more than 60 different books including research, children's literature, collections and translations.

His published books include Jatheccha Dhrupad, Chandane Mrigpadacinha, Love Story, Rajrupashi, Prempachali, Haremer Kahini, Opar Belay, Narighatito, Khei, Bristibilin and Antarjal.
