Photojournalist Zia Islam returns home

The daily Prothom Alo’s chief photojournalist Zia Islam, who suffered severe injuries in a road accident on January 9, has returned home from Singapore this evening after taking two and half-month long treatment there.

Zia along with his wife Sumaiya Khan reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka through a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines around 6:30pm, Kamrul Hasan, city editor of Prothom Alo, told The Daily Star.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Singapore Md Mustafizur Rahman and officials at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore greeted Zia before he left for home.

Zia suffered critical injuries on his head and legs when a speedy car hit his motorcycle from behind in front of Bashundhara City in Dhaka’s Panthapath area.

The photojournalist was first rushed to DMCH where he was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU). Later, a DMCH medical board referred him to Apollo Hospitals where he underwent a brain surgery.

Finally, Zia was flown to Singapore's Gleneagles Hospital from Dhaka for better treatment on January 13.

Kalabagan police arrested Kalyan Corraya, an actor and model, on January 10 in connection with the accident. However, a Dhaka court on January 16 granted bail to Kalyan.
