Over 400 illegal set-ups removed

Over 400 illegal structures from both sides of the Barisal-Pirojpur-Khulna road were removed in a drive yesterday.

The Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in the district conducted the drive between Pirojpur Teachers' Training Institution area and Pirojpur Old Bus Terminal.

Estate and Legal Officer of RHD Khulna Zone, also Executive Magistrate, Md Shariful Islam, and Executive Engineer of Pirojpur Roads and Highways Department Md Nazrul Islam were present.

The removed structures include restaurants, tea stalls, workshops, motor mechanic shops and furniture shops and a kitchen market.  

The sides of the busy road were grabbed by influential locals to build the structures, which were hampering free movement of vehicles, Nazrul said.

He said they will continue the drives to remove the illegal structures from the roadside.
