Nor’wester kills 8 in Kishoreganj, Mymensingh

Destroys hundreds of establishments

Eight people including two of a family were killed in tree collapses and lightning as a nor'wester lashed Kishoreganj and Mymensingh last night.

Several people were injured and hundreds of structures damaged by the storm.

KISHOREGANJ

Five people were killed as trees collapsed on them during the nor’wester that hit Pakundia, Kotiadi, Bajitpur and Kuliarchar upazilas between 6:30pm yesterday and 1:00am today, a correspondent from Kishoreganj reports.

The deceased are Hazrat Ali, 32, and his seven year-old-son Rijon of Kazihati village in Pakundia upazila; Shital Chandra Barman, 32, of Poilanpur in Kuliarchar poura area; Abdul Mannan Miah, 60, of Kazirchar village in Kotiadi; and Rima Akter, 10, of Tatalchar village in Bajitpur upazila.   

A tree fell on a tin-shed house at Kazihati village, leaving Hazrat and his son Rijon dead on the spot, said Hasan Al Mamun, an officer-in-charge of Pakundia Police Station.

Barman died when a tree collapsed on a three-wheeler carrying him in Poilanpur area, the correspondent reports quoting locals.   

Mannan, was injured when a tree fell on his house at Kazirchar, said Hedayatul Islam Bhuiyan, OC of Kotiadi Police Station.

He was taken at Kotiadi Upazila Health Complex where doctor declared him dead, the OC added.  

A tree hit Rima in her head on the premises of their house at Tatalchar village. Rima succumbed when she was being shifted to Zohurul Islam Medical College Hospital from local upazila health complex, hospital sources said.

MYMENSINGH 

The nor’wester killed three people in Phulbaria, Muktagacha and Trishal upazilas of the district.

Abdul Kamir, 40, of Radhakanai village of Phulbaria upazila took shelter at a clothing shop of a local market during the nor’wester but died when a tree fell on the shop around 11:30pm yesterday, Rifat Khan Rajib, OC of Phulbari Police Station, told our Mymensingh correspondent.

Jalal Ahmed, 32, of Santaspur village of Muktagacha upazila was killed as a tree fell on his tin-shed house during the storm, Kamal Hossain, OC of Muktagacha Police Station, said.      

A day-labour, Elias Ali, 32, of Trishal upazila was killed in a lightning during the storm, OC of the local police station told Moniruzzaman.

Hundreds of houses and crops land, poultry farms were destroyed due to the nor’wester that continued for around 10 to 15 minutes from 11:30pm.
