No one is above the law: Tureen

War Crimes Tribunal Prosecutor Tureen Afroz says Salauddin showed audacious behaviour at the dock many times.

Expressing satisfaction over the apex court’s death sentence for war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, a prosecutor of the war crimes tribunal said today that no one is above the law.

“The Supreme Court verdict proves that a lawmaker can be punished if he turns into a lawbreaker,” Tureen Afroz, a prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal said.

Salauddin showed audacious behavior many times at the dock during his trial for his war-time crimes and repeatedly asserted that he was a lawmaker, she said while talking to reporters after the verdict.

The BNP standing committee member has been largely criticised and condemned for his derogatory comments on different issues like the war crimes trial process and the country’s judiciary.

He also denied the allegations of war crimes brought against him whimsically, and made comments dishonouring the country’s Liberation War in 1971.

Meanwhile, Rana Das Gupta, another prosecutor, said the expectation of the people of the country has been fulfilled in the verdict as well that of the people in Chittagong.

Sanaul Huq, senior member of the investigation agency of ICT, said the case against Salauddin was most challenging as it was difficult to produce the witnesses because of their fear and panic.
