Writ seeks HC directive to display Bangabandhu’s portrait at JS session room

A Supreme Court lawyer today filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to preserve and display the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the parliament session room in Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Advocate Subir Nandi Das virtually submitted the petition as a public interest litigation to the HC, requesting it to pass a directive on the Jatiya Sangsad secretary and law secretary to take necessary steps to preserve and display the portrait of Bangabandhu.

In the petition, he said that there is an obligation of the respondents to preserve and display the portrait of Bangabandhu at the courtroom, parliament session room and other office rooms concerned as per Article 4 (A) of the constitution.

There is no portrait of Bangabandhu in the parliament session room of Jatiya Sangsad at present, he said, adding that the portrait had been displayed in the parliament session room of Jatiya Sangsad till August 15, 1975 when Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated.

Subir told The Daily Star that the HC may hold a hearing on the petition next Sunday.
