Woman tortured to death

A woman was killed on Saturday, allegedly by her husband, for dowry at Mashiur Nagar village in Chowgacha upazila of Jessore.

The deceased was Jahurannesa Tumpa, 20, wife of Tutul Hossain, 35, and daughter of Md Jahiruddin of the same upazila.

Victim's father Jahiruddin alleged that his daughter was murdered.

Police said Tutul, son of Manir Hossain, used to torture Tumpa for dowry since their marriage four years ago.

They had an altercation over the issue on Saturday night and Tutul beat Tumpa indiscriminately, leaving her severely injured, police said. In-laws took her to Jessore Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared her dead, police added.

They returned home with Tumpa's body and hung it from a ceiling of their house, telling neighbours that she had committed suicide. The neighbours informed the police about her death.

Police said they have to wait for the autopsy report to know the cause of death.
