Woman murdered a day after losing son

Accused husband handed over to police

After losing her son in a drowning incident on Thursday, a woman lost her own life on Friday night after her husband beat her up, allegedly for dowry, in Biral upazila of Dinajpur.

Locals and relatives of the woman, Nargis Begum, 30, daughter of Rafiz Uddin of Balandor village in the upazila, handed over the accused, Mostafa Kamal, 35, son of late Siraj Uddin of Khalpara village of the same upazila, to police yesterday.

Earlier in the morning, the woman’s brother Belal Hossain filed a case with Biral Police Station against Mostafa for killing Nargis.

According to the police, Mostafa had been living in Chattogram since he married another woman nearly two and a half years ago. He came to his first wife’s house, located near her parents’ house, on Thursday after hearing the news of their son’s death in a nearby pond earlier in the day.

The same night, Mostafa severely beat up and injured Nargis during an altercation over his demand for dowry, said her brother Belal, adding that Mostafa did not take her sister’s consent before his second marriage.

In the early hours of Friday, locals rescued Nargis in a critical state and sent her to Biral Upazila Health Complex, where she died later that night. They and Nargis’ relatives in the meantime held Mostafa locked in the house until handing him over to the police yesterday.

Golam Rasul, officer-in-charge of the police station, said an autopsy of the body was conducted at M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital before police handed over the body to the family of the deceased yesterday.
