Woman burnt ‘by husband’

A woman, set afire allegedly by her husband at their Barlekha upazila residence in Moulvibazar on June 4, is groaning in pain at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The victim, Asmina Begum, 25, was married to Sahed Ahmed, 30, of Muchegul village in Barlekha, three years ago, said her father Chhamir Uddin of Zafarpur village in the same upazila.

“Sahed often beat her over trivial matters. On the night of June 4, he wanted her gold ornament for selling. As Asmina disagreed, Sahed beat her, set fire to clothes at the house and pressed her there for some time before fleeing,” the victim’s father said in a case filed on Wednesday.

Neighbours took her to Barlekha Upazila Health Complex and then to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The woman suffered 60 percent burns, said Dr Ahmed Hosain of the health complex.

“Later she was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Barlekha Police Station OC Yasinul Haque gave monetary help and arranged my daughter’s admission there early yesterday,” said Chhamir Uddin.
