Violating polls code: Nixon Chowdhury gets anticipatory bail

The High Court today granted an eight-week anticipatory bail to independent lawmaker from Faridpur-4 constituency Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury, also known as Nixon Chowdhury, in a case filed on charges of violating the election code of conduct during Charbhadrasan upazila parishad by-election.

The court granted him bail on conditions that he will not misuse the privilege of his bail, he will assist the investigation officer in inquiring into the case and will not intimidate any witness of the case and the local administration, M Monjurul Alam, a lawyer for Nixon Chowdhury, told The Daily Star.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the bail order after holding hearing on a petition filed by Nixon Chowdhury on October 18, seeking bail in the case.

Nixon appeared before the HC bench during hearing of the bail petition.

Lawyer Dr Shahdeen Malik argued for him.

Deputy Attorney General Jannatul Ferdoushi Rupa told The Daily Star that the attorney general's office is yet to decide about filing an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC order of bail to Nixon Chowdhury.

The Election Commission filed the case with Charbhadrasan Police Station on October 15.
