A man was killed and several others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in Mirzapur upazila on Friday.

The deceased, Azizul Miah, 30, a member of Bangladesh Army, was son of late Abdur Rouf Miah of Deobhog village under Mohera union in the upazila.

Azizul, who used to serve at Bogura Cantonment, came to the village early Friday, Officer in Charge (OC) of Mirzapur Police Station AKM Mizanul Haque said.

Police, however, detained five people from the spot for their alleged involvement in the clash.

Tension was prevailing among people of Uttarpara and Dakkhinpara for the last two days centring a rivalry between Rasel and Kamrul of the village, the OC said.

As a sequel to the conflict, supporters of both Rasel and Kamrul attacked each other with lethal weapons around 9:30am, leaving a number of people from both sides, including Rasel's elder brother Azizul injured, he said.

Family members rushed Azizul, who was hit on the head, to Kumudini Hospital.

He later succumbed to his injuries on his way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:00noon, he added.

Meanwhile, a number of injured, who were taking treatment at Jamurki Upazila Health Complex, fled from the hospital when a police team went there, OC Mizanul said.
