At a time when nature flourishes amid man's reduced activities during the Covid-19 pandemic, the chairman of Mahilara union parishad (UP) under Barishal's Gournadi upazila has taken a novel initiative in memory of those who died due to the highly contagious disease.

Under the 'Covid -- Tree' project, hundreds of locals including teachers and students on Saturday noon took part in planting of palm, date and coconut trees on two sides of the five-kilometre-long rural road from United Primary School to Billagram of Mahilara UP in Gournadi upazila.

"We dedicated the tree planting work in memory of those who died due to Covid-19," said Mahilara UP Chairman Saikat Guha Picklu, who earlier received national award from the prime minister for large-scale tree planting in the area.

"Tree planting programme in the union will continue throughout the rainy season. Local people will get share of the fruits," Saikat added.

Palash, a volunteer, said he is happy to take part in the tree planting programme dedicated to the memory of those who died with Covid-19.
