Uber drivers on 24-hr strike, demand reduction in commission in Bangladesh

Dhaka Ridesharing Drivers Union today went on a 24-hour work abstention starting from 12midnight with a demand of reduction in the commission they pay to Uber.

They demanded the commission taken by Uber should be brought down to 12 per cent from the existing 25 per cent, Belal Ahmed, General Secretary of Dhaka Ridesharing Drivers Union told The Daily Star.

They also demanded the app to remove the bar on working hours as they are allowed to run their car under Uber only for 12 hours per day.

Out of 10,000 cars active on Uber, at least 7,000 drivers had joined the strike to press home their eight-point demand, Belal Ahmed, General Secretary of Dhaka Ridesharing Drivers Union told The Daily Star.

Bangladesh Ridesharing Drivers Union have also extended support to the cause.

Meanwhile, ridesharing app Uber’s Dhaka office issued a statement in this regard. Below is a copy of the statement:

“We regret the disruption caused to the rider and driver-partner community, due to a small group of individuals. We are committed to providing reliable, convenient and safe transport options to our riders, while providing access to flexible income opportunities for our driver partners. 

We always prioritize the well being of our driver-partners and have processes in place to address concerns and issues through our Partner Sheba Kendras and in-App feedback.’’

A spokesperson for Uber issued the statement.
