Two yaba traders killed in Cox’s Bazar gunfight: Police

Two suspected yaba traders were killed in a "gunfight" in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early today.

The deceased were identified as Mahmudullah, 26, of Old Pallanpara village under Taknaf municipality, and Mohammad Mizan, 28, of Jhimongkhali area under Whykong union in the upazila, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports, quoting police.

Randomly searching a microbus, police recovered 5,000 pieces of yaba pills and arrested its driver Mahmudullah yesterday around 9:00am, said Prodip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Taknaf Police Station.

Following his confessional statement, a team of the police station conducted a raid at Jhimongkhali area near Naf River at around 1.00am to recover arms and yaba, said the OC.

Sensing police presence, cohorts of the arrestee opened fire on the police team, forcing them to retaliate, the police official added.

Mahmudullah and Mizan sustained bullet wounds during the gunfight and were rushed to Taknaf Upazila Health Complex, Prodip said.

Doctors at the health complex referred them to Cox's Bazar General Hospital, where the duty doctors declared them dead, he added.

Two locally made firearms, three rounds of ammunition and 10,000 pieces of yaba were recovered from the spot.

Three cases are being filed in this regard, he said.
