Two to walk gallows, six get life term

A court here yesterday sentenced two people to death and six others to life imprisonment in connection with a case for killing college student Lal Chand in Kushtia town in 2011.

Judge Moshiur Rahman of Kushtia Women and Children Repression Tribunal handed down the verdict in presence of the convicts yesterday noon.

The death sentence awardees are Zahed Ibne Shahid alias Rana, son of Shahidul Islam of Chorhas area in Kushtia town, and Mostafizur Rahman alias Rajib, son of Golam Mostafa of Jhenidah’s Shailkupa upazila, while the lifers are Sohel Rana, son of Kaiyum Bihari, Shahin Uddin, son of Nazim Uddin, Jony Hossain, son of Monjil Hossain, Ripon Hossin, son of Amirul Islam, Shamin Hossain, son of Nizam Uddin, and Sohel Ibne Shahid alias Sohel, son of Shahidul Islam. They all hail from Chorhas area of Kushtia town.    

Public Prosecutor Anup Kumar Nandi said deceased Lal Chand and all the convicts were friends and they together used to run different seasonal business.

On December 31, 2011, the convicts, who developed a feud with slain Lal Chand over financial issue, called him at a betel leaf garden and killed him there.

The following day, Amir Ali, father of slain Lal Chand, then an Intermediate second-year student at Kushtia Islamia College, filed a case with Kushtia Model Police Station accusing 12 people.

After investigation, police submitted charge sheet against eight people on December 31, 2012.
