Two including the mother sentenced to death for killing 6-year-old

A Dhaka court today sentenced two persons, including the mother, to death for killing six-year-old Khandaker Samiul Azim Wafi in June 2010.

The convicts are: Humaira Akhter Ayesha and Shamsuzzaman Arif alias Bakku.

Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in their absence.

The judge observed that the mother, along with her lover, had committed a heinous crime by killing her son. So, she deserved the capital punishment, the judge observed.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge added.

Earlier the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 22 prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case.

Body of Samiul was recovered from a spot near his home at Adabar in Dhaka on June 24, 2010.

Following the incident, his father KM Azim filed a case with Adabar Police Station accusing his wife and Arif.

On November 2, 2010, Adabar Police Station Sub-inspector Kazi Shahan Haque, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Ayesha and Arif to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.

During the investigation, the two were arrested and they had given confessional statements before magistrates on different dates.

But they went into hiding after they went out of jail on bail granted by the High Court.

The court framed charges against the duo on February 2 of 2011.
