Two arrested for vandalizing idols

Two youths were arrested early yesterday for allegedly vandalizing idols of Hindu gods and goddesses at a mandap (makeshift temple) in Boalmari upazila of the district of Tuesday night.

After primary investigation, police arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the incident early yesterday, Officer in Charge of Boalmari Police Station Aminul Islam said.

The arrestees were identified as Nayan Sheikh, 20, and Raju Mridha, 26, of Ramdia village in the upazila.

Ramdia Karmakarpara Puja Mandap Committee President Suresh Chandra Karmakar said people, engaged in maintaining the puja mandap, went to take their dinner around 8:30pm on Tuesday night.

Taking advantage of the situation, a gang entered the mandap premises and vandalized different idols of Hindu god and goddess there, he added.

Being informed, Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jotin Chanda, Additional Superintendent of Police (Madhukhali Circle) Anisuzaman visited the spot.
