Trying to evade police, driver dies in accident

A locally improvised vehicle driver was killed as his vehicle overturned after police chased it in Tala upazila of Satkhira this morning.

The deceased, Abdus Samad Morol (45), driver of the vehicle -- locally called “Mahindra” -- was resident of Patkelghata in the upazila.

The incident took place while Samad was on his way to Patkelghata from Satkhira around 9:00am, a correspondent from Satkhira reports.

Highway police signaled him on Binerpota Bypass road to stop but he defied, according to witnesses.

He tried to escape and the policemen started to chase him, the witnesses said.

Samad sped and at one stage the vehicle overturned near Harun-Or-Rashid College, leaving him dead on spot, they said.

Locals demonstrated in the area, protesting the incident and demanded trial of the people involved with the incident, the correspondent reports quoting the witnesses.

Soma Khatun, daughter of the deceased, also demanded the same.

Confirming the incident, Wahid Morshed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patkelghata Police Station, said the body was handed over to the deceased’s family members without postmortem as per their request.

Mahmud Alam, officer-in-charge of Chuknagar Highway Police in Khulna’s Dumuria upazila, also confirmed the incident and said the law enforcers led by Sub-inspector Firoz Hossain seized four locally improvised vehicles on the bypass road.
