Train ticket sales begin tomorrow; train services to resume Sunday

Bangladesh Railway will start selling train tickets from tomorrow afternoon, as the authority is set to resume operation from Sunday on a limited scale.

Md Shamsuzzaman, director general of Bangladesh Railway, told The Daily Star tonight that they would start selling tickets from tomorrow afternoon.

He said they would resume operations of only few intercity trains from Sunday. "We would sell 50 percent of the tickets of each train only to ensure social distancing," he said.

No AC coach would be operational as per the Director General of Health Service guidelines, he added.

A BR official said at first they would operate only eight inter-city trains and later the number of trains would be increased.

Usually 50 percent tickets are being sold from counters while 50 percent through online. But the official said they were yet to get any instruction on whether the ongoing system would prevail or changes would be brought considering the present condition.

"There is meeting in this regard tomorrow [Saturday]. Everything would be finalised then," the official said wishing anonymity.

Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan is expected to brief media after the meeting.

However, BR staffers were seen drawing marks at Kamalapur Railway Station yesterday to make people maintain physical distancing while buying tickets.
