Tortured schoolboy lands in hospital

A schoolboy, beaten for alleged theft at Maldhara village in Sridharpur union under Jashore’s Abhoynagar upazila on Tuesday, is undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex.

The victim, Rakib Molla, 13, son of vegetable trader Israfil Biswas of Maldhara village, is an eighth grader at Varni-Bichali High School in Abhoynagar.

On Tuesday afternoon, Rakib was taking tea from a shop at Maldhara Market when Zahidul and Keramul, sons of tea stall owner Mohar Molla of Kodla village, took him to their stall.

Blaming Rakib for theft of Tk 6,000 from his shop, Zahidul tied him to a tree and beat him mercilessly.

Later, locals rescued Rakib and admitted him to Abhoynagar Upazila Health Complex.

Hasibul Islam Habu, president of Varni-Bichali High School’s management committee, demanded punishment of the torturers of the schoolboy.

The victim’s family filed a case against Zahidul and Mohar Molla and police are trying to arrest the accused, said Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Monirampur Police Station.
