Tired of running after justice

Says slain journalist Mukul’s wife on his 21st death anniversary

The widow of RM Saiful Alam Mukul, Jessore-based Bangla daily Runner’s slain editor who was killed in 1998, said she was at her wit’s end trying to get justice in the murder case.

Hafiza Akhter Shirin made the remark while attending a programme organised on Friday at Jashore Press Club to commemorate the 21st anniversary of her husband’s death in the hands of unknown assailants.

Journalists’ Union of Jashore (JUJ) organised the programme, chaired by Shahid Joy, president of JUJ.

Jahid Hasan Tukun, president of Jashore Press Club; Farazi Ahmed Syeed Bulbul, acting editor of Protidiner Katha; Mobinul Islam Mobin, editor of Gramer Kagoj; Anwarul Kabir Nantu, acting editor of Daily Loksamaj; and journalist leader Noor Islam spoke at the programme among others.

Mukul’s brother Kabirul Alam Dipu said the development of the case was very slow.

On August 30, 1998, Mukul was killed near his residence in Bezpara area of Jashore town. His father Golam Mazed, founding editor of the daily, was also killed during the rule of HM Ershad.

Mukul’s wife filed the case with Kotwali Police Station. Later, in a charge sheet submitted before a Jashore court, the Criminal Investigation Department mentioned names of 24 accused, including former minister and BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam. However, Tariqul’s name was later dropped from the case by the High Court.
