Three JMB men jailed for 10 years

A court here yesterday sentenced three members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in a case filed under Arms and Anti-Terrorism Act.

Chapainawabganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Shawkat Ali delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts -- Selim alias Harun, 36 of Charmohanpur under Sadar municipality, Shahadat alias Nayan, 42, of Nimtala Kanthal village and Abdul Mumin, 34, of Koiladiar village in Gomostapur upazila of the district.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. In default, they are to suffer six months more in jail.

According to the prosecution, a joint team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) conducted a drive at Johorpur village in Sadar upazila on July 7, 2009 and arrested Selim from his house with a pistol and eight bullets.

Later, following his confessional statement, the elite force members detained Shahadat and Mumin, who were trying to regroup the militant outfit, from Gomostapur the same day.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain of Rab-5 filed a case with Sadar Police Station accusing the three on July 8, 2009.

After investigation, Investigation Officer SI Kamrul Islam pressed charges against them on March 30, 2016.
