Tanvir admits link, says police

Tanvir Alam, one of the accused in lawyer Abida Sultana murder case in Barlekha upazila, told investigators that he was involved in the killing.

During a primary interrogation, Tanvir, an imam of a local mosque, disclosed the information, said Yasinul Huque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barlekha Police Station, yesterday.

Law enforcers recovered Abida’s mobile set from Tanvir’s bag in a room at Baruna Madrasa in Sreemangal upazila, which is 97 km away from the crime scene, said the OC.

Jasim Uddin, OC (investigation) of Sreemangal Police Station, said the lawyer might have been killed over felling of trees at their house and a piece of disputed land.

A court in Barlekha upazila on Tuesday granted a 10-day remand for Tanvir while his wife and mother-in-law were placed on an eight-day remand in the murder case.

Police recovered the body of Abida, 35, from her father’s house in Barlekha early Monday.

The victim was a member of Moulvibazar Bar Association and lived in Moulvibazar town with her husband Shariful Islam.

Shariful later filed a case with Barlekha Police Station, accusing some named and unnamed people.

The named accused are Tanvir, a tenant of the house, his brother Afsar Alam, wife Halima Sadia and mother-in-law Nahar Begum.

Tanvir, his wife and mother-in-law were arrested on Monday, said OC Yasinul, adding that they were raiding different areas to arrest the other accused in the case.
