Tangail Murder: Husband among 2 to die for killing housewife

A Tangail court yesterday sentenced two people, including the victim's husband, to death for killing a housewife for dowry in Bhuapur upazila in 2016.

The convicts are Jahirul Islam, and his father Mohammad Maznu, of Arjuna village in the upazila.  

They were tried in absentia. 

Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Khaleda Yasmin also fined them Tk 1 lakh each, Tangail Court Inspector Tanvir Ahmed said.

Quoting the case statement, Nasimul Akter, special public prosecutor of the tribunal, said, Taslima Akter, daughter of Khandakar Taslim Uddin of Kuthir Boyra village in the same upazila, was married to Jahirul in 2014.

But, after the marriage, Jahirul and his family members started torturing Taslima both physically and mentally for dowry.

As a sequel to the family feud, Jahirul and his father Maznu killed Taslima on November 28 in 2016 when others were not present at home. 

They later dumped her body in the Jamuna river and fled the area.  

The following day, locals spotted Taslima's body floating in the river and police, who recovered it and sent the body to the hospital for autopsy.

Later in the same day, victim's father filed a murder case with Bhuapur Police Station against Jahirul and his farther Maznu. 

police said they were conducting drives to arrest the absconding accused.
