Seven to die for murder

A court here yesterday sentenced seven people to death for killing a man in 2014.

The convicts are Tofa Mollah, 26, Palash Fakir, 32, and Siddique Khalasi, 36, of Singardak village, Ershad Matabbar, 32, Nayem Matabbar, 35, and Anwar Mollah, 28, of Chandra village under Bhanga upazila, and Sirajul Kha, 27, of Amir Kharkandi village in Sadarpur upazila.

Faridpur District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Selim Mia also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, Public Prosecutor (PP) Dulal Sarkar said, adding that Nayem and Sirajul were tried in absentia.

According to the case statement, Tofa called pick-up van driver Keramat Hawladar, son of late Shamsu Hawladar of Lohardia village in Bhanga upazila, over mobile phone on December 15, 2014.

Later, Tofa in cooperation with the other convicts killed Keramat and dumped the body at Cholildia village.

The following day, victim’s brother Ikram Hawladar filed a murder case with Bhanga Police Station accusing some unidentified people after police recovered Keramat’s body the same morning.

After scrutinising Keramot’s mobile number, police first detained Tofa, who confessed his involvement in the murder and also revealed the name of his other accomplices.

On December 7, 2015, the then Sub Inspector of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) SM Manirul Hossain submitted the charge sheet against seven people.
