Schools may open in February, sources say

The government has started thinking about resumption of classes at schools on a limited scale in February.

Aiming to bring next year's Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary School Certificate candidates to the class room, a highly placed source who attended a meeting between top officials of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education this evening told The Daily Star.

"But all these plans are subject to approval from high ups of the government and National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19," said the official.

Education Minister Dipu Moni, Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Ministry Zakir Hossen and top officials of the ministries joined the virtual meeting organised to talk about the Covid-19 situation and plans to reopen schools.

All educational institutions have remained closed since March 17 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The closure has been extended till January 30.

On December 29, Education Minister Dipu Moni at a press conference said that they are planning to bring the class-10 and class-12 students, who will sit for next year's exams, back to schools and colleges.
