SC adjourns hearing on plea filed by Sikder Group MD, brother on challenging HC order

The Supreme Court today adjourned for two weeks the hearing on a petition filed by Sikder Group Managing Director Ron Haque Sikder and his brother Dipu Haque Sikder, seeking its permission to challenge a High Court order.

The High Court had fined them for seeking anticipatory bail from abroad in a case filed against them for allegedly abducting, torturing and opening fire at two top Exim Bank officials over a loan permission.

A full bench of the Appellate Division of the SC, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the adjournment order after the petitioners' lawyer Barrister Ajmalul Hossain QC sought time from the apex court for the hearing.

During the virtual proceedings today, the lawyer told the court that his clients will decide about moving the petition after examining the full text of the HC order that was released on the website on Saturday.

On July 20, the HC ordered Ron Haque Sikder and Dipu Haque Sikder to give 5,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) each as fine to the Prime Minister's Relief and Welfare Fund within two weeks.

Ron Sikder and Dipu Sikder, currently in Thailand, filed a petition with the Appellate Division of SC through their lawyers on July 28 seeking permission to challenge the HC order.

On July 29, Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman sent the permission-petition to its full bench for hearing on August 9 (today).

Advocate Muhammad Saifullah Mamun, a lawyer for the petitioners, told The Daily Star that his clients will get two weeks' time to give the PPE from the date of receiving this HC order.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state during today's hearing.
