Rusty grenade comes in with imported iron scrap

A rusty but live hand grenade created huge tension at a re-rolling mill in Chattogram last night before it was defused by police.

The grenade made it to the factory apparently due to a mistake of the shipper and was brought in along with imported iron scrap. It was spotted by workers of the Bangladesh Steel Re-rolling Mills (BSRM).

The factory authorities immediately notified the local police, which then called in bomb disposal experts of Counter Terrorism at Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP).

"Six members of our team went to the spot and disposed of the grenade safely," Inspector Rajesh Barua, in-charge of the bomb disposal unit, told The Daily Star over phone.

"The factory authority told us that it might have come with the iron scrap consignments recently imported from Japan which unloaded at Chittagong Port between June 21 to July 1," said Rajesh Barua.

Omar Soyeeb, official spokesman of BSRM, said that they would notify the shipper about the matter.
