Road communication between Sundarganj and Rangpur remained suspended for the last four days as a risky bridge across Golakata canal suddenly tilted.

Averting probable fatal mishap, Sundarganj upazila administration suspended movement of all types of transports over the bridge till any alternative arrangement.

Locals said they saw that half portion of western part of the bridge tilted all on a sudden on Saturday afternoon. Later, they informed Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Solaiman Ali about the matter.

After visiting the spot, the UNO suspended movement of all kinds of heavy transports over the bridge. However, rickshaw-vans and motorcycles are still moving over the bridge taking risk.

Sonaroy union parishad Chairman Sayed Badirul Ahsan said in recent years, the bridge was declared vulnerable due to its ramshackle condition, yet the transports have been crossing the bridge taking risk, which ultimately tilted due to lack of timely renovation.

Despite repeated calls, the authorities concerned are yet to take any steps to renovate the bridge, he said.

UNO Solaiman said he contacted local executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department for taking immediate measure to restore communication in this road.
